What do you consider “pure joy”? We probably don’t answer that question with all the hardships and trials we’ve been through. Yet, this is what James says we should consider “pure joy.” James 1:2-4; 12 is our main text today. Several people say that they wish this wasn’t in the Bible because it is such a difficult teaching. What does James mean by this paradoxical teaching, and how do we apply it today?
Here are my 3 Observations that we will discuss:
No Resistance = No Growth (but how much resistance can we handle?)
Maturity is not an Automatic Promise
Look for the Silver Lining

Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Faith and Wisdom
2 My brothers and sisters, whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance complete its work, so that you may be complete and whole, lacking in nothing.
12 Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Testing of Your Faith
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
